Shia, Sunni Muslim attendees of Unity Conference pay tribute to Imam Khomeini

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The 30th Islamic unity conference guests attended the holy shrine of Imam Khomeini paying tribute to the founder of Islamic Revolution of Iran, the late Imam Khomeini.

Addressing the group, Secretary General of the World Forum for Proximity of the Islamic Schools, of Thought, Ayatollah Mohsen Araki counted the presence of Non-Iranian guests of this conference as an honor for Islamic Republic of Iran.

Holding the late Imam Khomeini as the pioneer of Islamic unity, Ayatollah Araki named Imam Khomeini as the instructor of unity among Muslims.

Attended by prominent members across the World of Islam, the 30th Islamic Unity Conference is to be held from 15th to 17th of December.

The 30th Islamic unity conference under the banner of "Unity, Necessity of Countering Takfiri movements"  was kicked off by President Hasan Rouhani in Iranian Capital City of Tehran with religious thinkers and elites from more than 50 countries across the World in attendance.

For the past three decades Iran has invited Islamic religious leaders, Sunni and Shia from all over the globe to Tehran, to discuss unity among Muslims. The Islamic Unity conference called for greater convergence among Muslim groups.

The week between 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal and 17th Rabi-ul-Awwal is commemorated as a Muslim unity week.

According to traditions narrated from Sunni Muslim scholars, the birthdate of the final Prophet of Islam falls on 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal while the Shias consider 17th Rabi-ul-Awwal as the exact birth date.

In order to bridge this difference and use it as an opportunity to unite Muslims, Iran’s Imam Khomeini designated the period from 12th to the 17th of Rabi al-Awwal as the Islamic Unity Week. This dynamic concept aims to bring all Muslim schools of thought on the common platform of Islamic unity.

Since its inception, the Islamic Unity Week has been marked annually, not only in Iran, but also throughout the world, and has played an important role in bringing the various Islamic Schools of Thought on a single platform.

Islamic unity conference is mounted so as to promote unity of the Islamic Ummah which has been a major axis in the thoughts of many leading Muslim intellectuals worldwide.
